Kelly Post Honors Students

For the sixth consecutive year the Michael A. Kelly Post 2433, Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary has sponsored a Young American Award's program which is designed to recognize students who learn the pledge of Allegiance. Each student in a Union School that learns the pledge is presented with a certificate.  About 700 are presented each year to students in the Union Public Schools as well as St. Michael's, Holy Spirit and Deron Schools. The support of Ms. Ponce at the Board of Education, the principals and administration of all schools and especially the teachers is paramount to the success of this program and is appreciated by the Kelly Post.

Kelly Post Celebrates 80th Anniversary

The Michael A. Kelly Post 2433, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Union, recently celebrated its 80th anniversary with a luncheon at the Suburban Golf Club. Joining with the post was its Ladies Auxiliary which will turn 80 in September. In 1932 a group consisting mainly of veterans of WWI and the Spanish American War decided to form a VFW Post in Union and solicited help from a group called the Union War Dads and other township leaders. With the support of then Mayor Biertuempfel, the Township Committee and the War Dads, they organized and were chartered, taking the name of Pvt. Michael A. Kelly, a doughboy from Union who lost his life in France a few weeks before WWI ended. (Pictured at Kelly Post 80th Anniversary) Leo Graf, 12-term Post Commander; Earl E.
